Productivity app ideas that a solo developer can actually win
6 min read · updated
Productivity is the biggest category we score and the one people most often assume is closed. The numbers say something more specific: it is big, it is crowded, and its best openings need a week rather than a quarter.
The numbers
In the July 2026 US run, Productivity carried roughly 113.7M modelled installs a month across 154 charted competitors, behind a median top-grossing app holding about 874,300 lifetime ratings.
Compare that to Photo & Video's wall of about 1,193,900 on 144 competitors. Productivity is the larger market and the lower wall, which is the opposite of the usual assumption that bigger means harder.
Three scored openings
| Score | Idea | Takes from | Build |
|---|---|---|---|
| 81 | Offboard · get everything out before deletion day | an open lane | week |
| 70 | Pagecast · the listener that shows its price on screen one | Speechify | month |
| 61 | Plainscan · the scanner that never asks for a card | CamScanner | week |
All three are pricing complaints, not feature gaps
Look at what each one actually fixes. Pagecast exists because Speechify's US listeners left counted complaints about only seeing the price after a setup they could not skip. Plainscan exists because CamScanner users were charged by a trial that promised a reminder and never sent one, and found their export path behind a watermark paywall.
Neither idea is a better scanner or a better reader. Both are the same capability sold honestly, which is why both are a week or a month of work rather than a quarter. This is the most reliable shape of opening on the App Store, and it is invisible from the charts alone.
The top idea has no incumbent at all
Offboard scored highest in the category and names no anchor app. It is aimed at people trying to get their data out of a service before an account closes, and nothing charting in the category serves them.
An open lane scores well for a good reason and carries a real risk worth naming: no incumbent also means no proof anybody pays for it. An idea built on an incumbent's counted complaints has evidence that the demand exists and is currently being handled badly. An open lane has evidence of a gap, which is not the same thing.
Before you commit
Run the money test on the storefront you actually intend to launch in. In several US categories zero of the top ten grossing apps hold under 5,000 ratings, meaning no small app is being paid there, while the UK and Turkish versions of the same category return two and three. Finding a profitable niche covers that test in full, and what a modelled install is worth covers why the install figures above are a band rather than a number.

Questions
- Is Productivity a good category for an indie iOS developer?
- It is the largest of the three we cover, at roughly 113.7M modelled US installs a month, and the wall is about 874,300 ratings across 154 charted competitors. It is not easy, but it is materially easier than Photo & Video, whose wall is 37% higher on fewer competitors, and its openings need less engineering.
- What kind of Productivity app can one person still ship?
- Narrow tools that resolve somebody else's pricing decision. The top-scoring idea in this run was a one-week build for getting your data out of a service before deletion day, with no named incumbent at all. Notes apps and task managers are not where the openings are.
- Where do these numbers come from?
- The July 2026 monthly Scout run, US storefront, which is public. Installs are modelled from rating velocity and labelled as estimates; competitor counts and rating walls are computed from Apple's own chart and lookup data.
