The UK's #5 top-grossing business app is its worst-reviewed

· 4 min read

A chart position tells you an app is winning. It tells you nothing about whether the people using it are happy. Those are separate signals, and the distance between them is the most reliable place to find something worth building.

Here is the clearest example in our June 2026 run, which is published free and in full so you can check every number below yourself.

Top Grossing #5, and 86% negative

QuickBooks Small Business sits at Top Grossing #5 in the UK. Of its 200 most recent UK reviews, 172 are one or two stars. That is 86% negative, the worst share of any flagship app in that entire run, across all three storefronts we cover.

It is not a slow decline either. Over the four weeks before the run it climbed from rank 99 to 78 on the free chart. Demand was rising while goodwill collapsed.

What the reviews actually say

We cluster negative reviews by root cause rather than counting them, because "crashes on launch" and "won't open anymore" are one problem, not two. For QuickBooks in the UK the clusters were:

Method card, step 3 of 5: cluster the complaints by root cause. Gate: 25 complaints and a 25% minimum share. Output: every cluster carries its count. Evidence: verbatim quotes, never paraphrase.
A cluster only counts as an opening past the gate: at least 25 recent one- and two-star reviews and at least 25% of the sample. See the stage in full.
  • The app will not load (around 70 reviews). One reviewer: "Around 40% of the time it just doesn't load, wheel of death for minutes on end."
  • A forced migration (around 18). The move from QuickBooks Self-Employed to Sole Trader for Making Tax Digital is UK-only and deeply unpopular: "I found QBSE to be really easy to work with and this forced change is a total nightmare."
  • Receipt upload broken (around 12), and dead bank feeds (around 10): "haven't been able to load bank transactions since 23rd March."

The pricing complaint is the one that should worry Intuit most: "£50 a month for an app that can't even make an invoice without freezing."

Why this is an opportunity and not just a bad review

A regulatory deadline is pushing a large number of UK sole traders through this app at exactly the moment it is least reliable. Several reviewers name Xero as their exit, which tells you they are actively shopping. That combination, forced migration plus active shopping plus a broken incumbent, is rarer than it sounds.

It is also honest about the difficulty. Building against Making Tax Digital means a submission API, agent authorisation and fraud-prevention headers. Our scoring calls that effort heavy and prices it in rather than hiding it, which is why the idea does not simply top the chart on outrage alone. The whole scoring engine is public, weights included.

The general lesson

Do not read the top of a chart as a list of solved problems. Read it as a list of distribution that already exists, then go and check whether the people inside it are being served. In this run, three of the highest-grossing apps we looked at had a majority of recent reviewers rating them one or two stars.
